Film and Broadcast

More than 300 films are made around the Berlin area every year, making it a hub for German Film. The production companies are supported in part from the regional funding institution Medienboard and the nationally operating FFA. The German Film Prize (Deutscher Filmpreis) and innumerable movie premiers help generate and encourage networking within the industry.

Due to excellent conditions for production as well as desirable film locations, Berlin also attracts international producers. Hence, a number of major motion pictures have arisen from Berlin in recent years. In addition, the international Film Festival Berlinale shines on a regular basis with a constant rising of attendance rates due in part to its ever-increasing calibre. Last but not least, Berlin is the capital of talent, or simply put; the most popular place to live for many actors, producers and directors.

The film and television industry is also a significant employer in Berlin. It employs about 12% of Germany’s working population. Over 40% of the annual turnover of round 2,000 film and television companies based here in Berlin is generated by television productions. Berlin-Brandenburg is considered to be one of the future’s most important TV production locations.

Moreover, the Berlin region offers one of the most diverse radio markets in Europe with 40 radio broadcasters in total. Around 30 different stations can be received only over ultra short wave frequencies on analogue and terrestrial channels.
