Theatre & Dance
Creative City Berlin

The existence of innumerous public and private theatres, as well as the independent theatre scene, support the fact that Berlin was and remains a city of theatre. A myriad of theatre styles are practiced in Berlin; puppetry, physical theatre, improvisational theatre, varieté and performance theatre. These are all catered for by institutions such as Zeitgenössische Oper, Deutsches Theater, Theaterdiscounter, Komödie am Kurfürstendamm, Friedrichstadtpalast etc. The established repertoire on offer is complemented by the many theatre festivals that take place in Berlin, for example, Berliner Theatertreffen, Tanz im August and No Limits. Together all these elements reflect the creativity currently present in Berlin's theatre scene as well as its artistic potential.
In addition, Berlin has evolved into an international centre for dance in recent years. A diverse range of performance locations can be found dotted throughout the city, and various festivals enhance the already extensive calendar of events. There is a constant influx of international artists, who invariably help inspire new impulses of artistic events. Choreographers and dance companies from Berlin are also venturing out, achieving national as well as international success with their performances. Examples of this can be found in universally recognised companies such as the State Ballet, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Malakhov, or Sasha Waltz & Guests.
