Deserving authors who are subject to financial difficulties may obtain help from the Foundation for German Artist Assistance. This Foundation does not offer any financial support. The Senate awards work scholarships for Berlin authors (author scholarships) to writers who have permanently reside in Berlin. The scholarships also give Berlin authors the possibility to begin planned literary works, to complete drafts and to continue and/or complete works already begun. The responsible tax office decides on a case by case basis. In principle, you must notify the tax office if you have received a scholarship. The allocation notice serves as proof that the assistance came from public funds. You will find your closest tax office at: www.berlin.de/sen/finanzen/steuern/finanzaemter/
There are residence scholarships for Berlin authors in the Alfred Döblin House in Wewelsfleth - this scholarship is awarded by the Culture Department in co-operation with the Academy for the Arts. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) regularly invites foreign artists from the various fields to Berlin (‘Berlin Artist Programme’). By means of a longer stay (one year, film producer 6 months) and active co-operation with foreign artists, the goal is to stimulate the Berlin scene, allow cultural and artistic exchange and question boundaries.
