Opposite language is increasingly asserting itself. However, this is by no means reflected in the proportion of women in the film industry: According to statistics presented by Creative Europe MEDIA at the beginning of the year, approximately 70 percent of applications for funding were submitted by male-dominated companies between 2014 and 2018. This is why gender balance will be given significantly higher priority in the MEDIA follow-up programme from 2021. The European Audiovisual Observatory has now published a sobering report: less than one fifth of European films were shot by women in 2017.
