Few regulations have caused as much of a stir as Berlin's rent cap (Mietendeckel), which came into force in February 2020 and freezes rents for 1.5 million apartments for five years. The Berlin law came with the novelty of allowing rents to be lowered to 2013 levels, breaking new legal ground. After associations sued, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the rent cap null and void in its declaration yesterday.
