Monumental Ukrainian art - the reconstruction of the original artwork ‘Biotechnosphere’ by the Soviet
Ukrainian underground and avant-garde artist Fedir Tetianych (1942-2007), can be seen in front of the
ZAK - Centre for Contemporary Art - in the courtyard of the Spandau Citadel.

‘Fedyr Tetianych was a visionary who was inspired by the findings of space research and the cosmonaut
Yuri Gagarin's flight into space in 1961. The finiteness of human life in the face of the infinite universe
presented him with a challenge that led him to search for ways to overcome the limitations of life.

His idea was to support the biological body through the newly developed technologies for space exploration.
Passionate about developing scenarios for the future, Fedir Tetianych invented the so-called Biotechno-
sphere, a space capsule with a diameter of 2.40 metres, intended as an autonomous shelter for humanity
both on Earth and in space.’

Location of the original artwork: City of Popasna in the Ukrainian region of Luhansk (now under Russian
occupation), melted down during the collapse of the Soviet Union

History of creation: In 2024, with the support of the Urbane Künste Ruhr curatorial team, the historical
biotechnosphere was recreated as part of the exhibition project ‘Landscapes of an Ongoing Past’, in
search of past and future utopias.

Artists: Bogdan Tetianych (son of Fedir Tetianych) and Bögdana Kosmina

Dimensions: 4 metres high, 2.6 x 2.7 metres wide
Weight: 5 tonnes

Exhibition period: until mid-May 2025

Urbane Künste Ruhr is a decentralised institution for contemporary art in the Ruhr region under the under

uhr in cooperation with the Zollverein Foundation for the Ruhrtriennale 2024. 16.8. to 22.9.2024 in the salt
