Description

Actually, it should go without saying that everyone should be able to attend cultural events such as concerts, theater plays, dance performances, or cinema shows (if it is possible again). However, people with disabilities are unfortunately often excluded or almost always dependent on the help of others because they are confronted with great challenges in order to participate.

Information about upcoming events is mostly not provided in easy language. People with a visual impairment find it difficult to book tickets for events on their own, a walking disability prevents many from attending concerts and theater performances because they cannot find a local companion, and most events still do not offer sign language interpreters or audio description for hearing impaired people.
As a result, these people often do not have the freedom to decide when and where they want to participate in cultural life.

We want to change this. Together with you.

New technologies and the ongoing digitalization offer a variety of possibilities to overcome some of these challenges and barriers.

That's why we are organizing the BREAKATHON on November 27th, an inclusive 48-hour online hackathon with the goal of developing open-source prototypes for digital tools that can help breaking down barriers to access cultural events. Originally planned as a face-to-face event, the hackathon will now take place online due to corona restrictions.

Programmers, designers, technology nerds and other interested people, with and without disabilities, are invited to participate and help building solutions. The challenges that we are trying to solve are the results of a survey that we conducted with over 100 people with special needs and organizations that work in that field.

From today on you can get a short overview of the challenges and register for the Hackathon here --> https://kudiba.berlin/breakathon/

The successful teams not only contribute to a more inclusive and diverse cultural landscape, they also get to win a mix of cash and other cool prizes.

Afterwards, we will produce a guide on "How to organize barrier-fee, accessible events" free of charge. This playbook will include all prototypes from the BREAKATHON and other already available resources. This will hopefully help event organizers, and the cultural industry in general, to offer more accessible events.
KuDiBa is a joint initiative of Handiclapped-Kultur Barrierefrei e.V. and MusicTech Germany e.V. The project is funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
