OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS
for participation in FuturePerfectLand, an artistic funfair for immersive speculative future scenarios shaped by the climate crisis
Monopol Berlin, September 9th - 26th, 2021
DEADLINE: April 30th, 2021, 23:59 CET
FuturePerfectLand is looking for artists!
This collaborative experimental art project playfully appropriates the format of an open-air travelling funfair as a provocative curatorial framework in which the artworks become the “rides”. They stage speculative future scenarios influenced by the escalation of environmental change. Inspired by the genres of speculative fiction and afrofuturism, FuturePerfectLand counters the narrow spectrum of dystopian narratives that dominate popular thought about the future. It proposes a temporary, spectacular and immersive “playground” that disrupts the linearity of time, so that the range of intense emotions revolving around the climate catastrophe can be experienced in a controlled environment.
We are currently welcoming proposals for FuturePerfectLand “rides”: site-specific, immersive, participatory and transdisciplinary artistic environments that make use of auditory, visual, performative, narrative and/or somatic strategies in order to submerge the visitor in a liminal world on the border between reality and fiction. Artists are invited to apply with daring, radical, surprising, playful and uncanny imaginaries of a speculative fictional world shaped by the far-reaching implications of the climate crisis. We are especially interested in alternative economies, the future of food, explorations of religion in the future, indigenous and post-colonialist imaginaries, trans- and non-binary speculative fiction, and disability futures. Proposals that take a multi-sensory approach and speak to the sense of smell or taste are also particularly welcome.
FuturePerfectLand will reside on the grounds of Monopol Berlin, a former distillery turned into a cultural center, where it will open its doors on September 9th, and stay for three weeks before continuing its journey. It will be open during daytime on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Artworks should be largely available during the opening hours of the funfair, so visitors can experience all of the artworks within a (half) day.
Selected applicants become a part of the FuturePerfectLand crew, and work closely together with each other and the curatorial team, not just to produce their own work, but also to contribute to the creation of the funfair itself. For the creation of their work, each artist (duo/group) receives an artist fee of 1250€ and a production budget of up to €1500. For the collaborative work on the creation of the funfair, an additional fee is available dependent on participation, which can reach up to 500€.
Applications to this Open Call are due on April 30th. The curatorial team will review all proposals, and aims to communicate their final selection within 2 weeks after the deadline closes. After a round of initial conversations, selected artists are expected to start work between mid- and end of May.
If you have any further questions, feel free to send us an email to email@example.com
We look forward to your proposals!
