Are you interested in arts administration or management? Would you like an opportunity to help bring a successful 11-year-old literary project to the next level? SAND is searching for someone to join our collaborative team as a Distribution & Fundraising Coordinator, part of a two-person team, coordinating current and future distribution and funding opportunities to get our journal out into the world and help keep us financially sustainable.
Over the past 11 years and 22 issues, SAND has grown from a small publishing project within Berlin’s English-language literary community into a nonprofit with contributors and readers in many countries around the world. We now have professional distributors in two countries, with more opportunities on the horizon, and are looking for ways to make our volunteer-run organisation into more than a hobby.
This transition will require lots of creativity, strategy, and paperwork. We are looking for a new Distribution & Fundraising Coordinator who is passionate about the practical side of organising arts projects, enjoys a well-structured spreadsheet, and can think ahead and scout out new possibilities – but also pursue some of the many leads we already have. This involves working with current and future distributors, finding possible sponsorships and fundraising opportunities, and grant application writing in collaboration with the rest of the SAND team. Ultimately, you will shape what the role looks like based on your own skills and interests.
This would be an excellent stepping stone to a managerial position in various aspects of arts management and administration. The weekly time commitment is approximately 4 hours depending on your workflow.
You should have most of the following:
-Fluent English (non-native speakers welcome)
-German, including reading knowledge, is a big plus but not essential
-Excellent email etiquette and experience with business correspondence
-A head for numbers and spreadsheet skills
-An appreciation for writing and literature
-Ideas about funding opportunities and how arts projects survive financially
-Confidence when leading conversations around the topic of money
-A basic knowledge of invoicing processes
-An interest in growing SAND’s local and global community
-Being Berlin-based is preferable, candidates based elsewhere (but in a similar time-zone) are also welcome to apply

Tasks will include:
-Coordinating with our regional and online distribution channels, keeping track of accounts, and coming up with sales promotions/opportunities
-Keeping in touch with our independent (non-distributed) stockists in Berlin and around Europe
-Taking care of the reporting/follow-up requirements for existing grants and sponsorships
-Researching new sales and distribution opportunities
-Researching possible grants and sponsorships
-Tracking our income and expenses and coordinating new fundraising options
-The opportunity to partake in all SAND editorial meetings and provide input on the content of the coming issue
-Attending monthly team meetings at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month
Currently, the full SAND team works on a volunteer basis, though we are pursuing further funding options to enable us to pay ourselves an honorary fee. When we are able to pay ourselves, as we have during a previous grant, we split our funds equally between all team members.
We’re a friendly, supportive team of 12 with a range of backgrounds and day jobs, and we welcome applications from all ages and identities. We work flexibly and try our best to accommodate team members’ individual needs and situations. We meet monthly as a full group (currently via Zoom, usually in-person) and have a non-hierarchical team structure.
