Music, Dance, Film and the Spoken Word
Werkstatt der Kulturen (WdK) is the only not for profit organisation in Berlin which focuses exclusively on the vast field of transcultural arts. Every year, the WdK puts on signature events to celebrate transcultural arts, such as the Karneval der Kulturen, probably the largest street festival in Europe with 1.5 million people visiting in 2011, the Nelson Mandela Festival or creole the most prestigious world music contest in Europe. The WdK regularly provides space for performances, exhibitions and discussions across the spheres of music, film, dance and literature, for instance the wildly popular WorldWideCinema series or the excellent MigrationMusic evenings.
Black History Month is a regular feature in the annual calendar of the WdK. However, one-off events like the ambitious history and music project 1884 or the opening of our venue for free Fête de la Musique concerts shows the versatility of the WdK as a place where a rare mix of unique, original and exciting cultural gems can be discovered, even in a city like Berlin, which already enjoys a rich diet of music and culture.
Any method of bringing transcultural arts into the cultural mainstream is worth exploring, which is why we are co-operating with various partners from art, culture and also community groups to develop a diverse range of events. This has resulted in the intriguing ’Religions and Belief Systems, which include concerts with the Conservatory of Turkish Music, the Performance and Video Art Festival “Home Sweet Home“ with GlogauAir, the meeting of theatre groups from primary schools in Neukölln, the “Nights of Ramadan“, or 200 years later ...
Outside promoters are always welcome to rent space within the WdK.In order to promote diversity we, ourselves, try to be as diverse as possible.
