Design from Berlin is synonymous with diversity, inventiveness and an interdisciplinary approach. Over the last 10 years, Berlin has witnessed the development of an extraordinary design environment consisting of studios, agencies, trade fairs, conferences and sales platforms. According to a report of Projekt Zukunft from 2019 the design economy consisted of 7.991 businesses with more than 40.000 emplyees and a total revenue of 7.3 billion Euro. In contrast to well established design-epicenters such as Paris, Milan or London, Berlin inspires the design world with its constant change and still-to-be-finished character. In 2006, UNESCO appointed Berlin a City of Design, giving well-deserved international recognition to both Berlin and its designers who enrich the city with their creativity. Since then, the German capital is also part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network.
On Creative City Berlin, internationally acclaimed educational institutions, trend-setting conventions and festivals and designers present themselves. In addition, Creative City Berlin advertises as a cooperation partner for large events like the DMY Designfestival, and cooperates with networks such as the International Center of Design (IDZ), Designerdock or Designkritik. In our interview section we give young designers, businesses and networks a say and ask questions that are currently much debated, for example how designers will be able to achieve a sustainable production in the future.
