Description
Sinéad Aldridge is known for her intimate and richly layered abstract paintings. She works on board stretched with linen and employs a range of brush marks, working with colour and gesture to create a poised and controlled internal order on the painting surface. She begins with a series of six canvases, working on them simultaneously, where the marks are layered up, pared back and nudged forward. Each painting is formed slowly over weeks, sometimes years, imbued with the memory of ordinary life and the intense process of looking. Having developed her painting practice for almost three decades, Aldridge creates a unique and intimate experience that quietly arrests the viewer, allowing them solace and inviting them to contemplate what it means to be human. When colour and touch align the work becomes a poetic dialogue on the nature of identity.
Aldridge earned a BFA at Camberwell Art College London 1985 and was awarded a DAAD scholarship in Germany in 1986, Returning to London she worked at her Brixton studio producing large scale figurative abstract painting evocative of artists like de Kooning & Francis Bacon. Returning to Ireland in 1991, she settled in Co Sligo and taught Fine Art to BA students at the I.T Sligo for over a decade. Since her solo exhibition ‘Fast time’ at the Model Niland in 2002 she has chosen to work on a reduced scale. She completed her MA in Visual Arts Practices IADT Dublin 2010. She is married and presently lives and works in Berlin.
