Recycling, fashion, eco-sustainability. The three words that best describe the “TappoBag” project, planned and carried out by Let’s Eco Party, an italian environmental non-profit organization born in 2010.
In 2012, Smiler, our upcycling designer, was looking for a waste material not yet used in fashion and highly polluting. After careful research and analysis, she became aware of bottle caps waste as a big problem. So the idea to create a bags brand, using this waste material.
The new eco-fashion bag was called Tappo Bag (tappo, in italian, means bottle cap). We are the creators of this original work, protected by copyright. We collect waste materials and turn them into one-of-kind and limited edition products.
In January 2013, we've presented our project at Berlin Fashion Week (Ethical Fashion Show) and we’ve started a collaboration with Open Design City at Betahaus in Berlin. In February 2013 we've been selected for Camden Lock Market in London, and from March 2013 we've been invited to show our collection everywhere. In November 2013 we’ve been selected from Wowcracy for Vogue Talents Contest 2, reaching the funding goal in less than one week.
From January 2014, TappoBag has been selected from DaWanda for these special features: “Giftfinder Italia”, “Tendenze Primavera Italia”, “Tendances européennes France”, “Trend Report Primavera/Verano Espana”, “Trend Report Berlin”, “Trend Report Poland”, “LoveBook DaWanda 2014”.
Today, TappoBag collaborates with fashion related business like Wowcracy, Dawanda, Blomming, Fancy, Eco First Art, Scartline, Ethical in Style, Fruugo, Riciclarte, and many more.
TappoBag is a project that has a soul. We’re not just selling products, we’re doing something that is making a positive change in the world. Our mission is to create high quality products without the exploitation of the environment, that is too often present in our industry. The strong point of our project is that we are able to reduce, at the same time, the impact on the environment in two different industry fields: the beverage industry and the fashion industry.
We’ve partnered with bars and restaurant in Tuscany to repurpose unwanted bottle caps. Instead of having their bottle caps end up in landfills, we reuse them to make our bags. So far, TappoBag has saved thousands of bottle caps from landfills.
Each bag is handmade with lots of love and the highest standards in craftsmanship by our volounteers and talented artisans. It takes between 4 hours to 4 days to create just one TappoBag.
To create our TappoBag, the first step is to collect, wash and sterilize bottle caps. After that, each bottle cap is pierced (4 holes). Then, bottle caps are woven together with metal jump rings. The last step is the careful process of sewing the bag, and sewing bottle caps on it.
Each bag prevents, from 20 to 230 bottle caps, from ending up in landfills, and about 90% of materials we use are upcycled or recycled. Our bags are completely hand crafted, cruelty free and could be customized on request. With over 12 different bags and accessories to choose from, over 20 different fabric possibilities and more than 30 different bottle caps to choose from, customers can design a TappoBag for themselves that is totally unique. Whether they want a new envelope clutch, crossbody bag, laptop case, wristlet, or hobo, Tappo Bag has the answer!
The environmental impact of transporting our products is another important consideration. For that reason, we plant one or more trees for each bag sold, supporting “Trees for the Future” projects.
In the beginning, we didn’t think at TappoBag as an ambitious project. But now we have to think about it because we are growing up fast, far exceeded anything we could have imagined.
With this project, we hope to inspire people to care more about our Planet and we would like to increase awareness and providing solutions to the problems bottle caps cause to wildlife and humans alike. A worldwide problem.
With our work, we hope to make a difference. For a cleaner, healthier, and more peaceful planet. We all need to make better choices, because taking care of our Earth is no longer an option… it’s a necessity.
