Description

In 1909 Max Liebermann built a summer house on the Wannsee Lake, proudly naming it his “castle by the sea”. Here he not only found badly needed peace and quiet from the bustle of the city but also discovered the principal themes of his late work. The 7,000 square meter garden, designed according to the artist’s own ideas, is the subject of more than 200 paintings.
In 1940 Liebermann’s widow was forced to sell the property to the Reichspost (national postal service) and in subsequent decades the house served changing, diverse functions.
Today the house and garden have been painstakingly restored to their former lustre. Along with a permanent exhibition of the artist’s paintings, the villa stages smaller, thematic shows of the work of Liebermann and his contemporaries. The focus is on the paintings created at the Wannsee, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to experience works by Liebermann where they were created.
The Liebermann Villa at the Wannsee is funded by the Max-Liebermann-Gesellschaft Berlin e.V. (Max Liebermann Society) founded in 1995. It is due to the efforts of this Society that this eminent historic site is now protected as a historic landmark and has been restored and accorded museum status by the Parliament of Berlin.
