Description

Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) is a site of contemporary art and discourse production. It was founded in 1969 with the goal of presenting contemporary fine art to a broader public, and of inviting that public to actively participate in cultural processes.

In 1970, n.b.k. founded one of Germany’s first “Artotheken,”—here, art enthusiasts can borrow works of international art from the twentieth and twenty-first century free of charge. The collection is made up of paintings, sculptures, watercolors, collages, gouaches, drawings, prints, and photographs; it comprises over 4,000 works. Artothek mobil creates exhibitions for public institutions, schools, and businesses. In a special display that was conceived by artist Silke Wagner (Roland, 1998) n.b.k. presents the Artothek collection with changing thematic emphases and in various forms. With the Video-Forum, n.b.k. provides a collection of over 1,700 international works of video art to the public. Since the founding of the collection in 1971, it has been expanded constantly through co-productions and new purchases. The holdings of the Video-Forum can be watched in a separate space. Presentations and screenings based on the collection introduce current and historical developments in video art to the public and put them up for discussion. Both collections—Artothek and Video-Forum—are open to the general public, and represent spaces of experimental art education as well as cultural education.
