Description

The Stadtgeschichtliche Museum Spandau is located at the former arsenal of the citadel. At the ground floor of the brick building erected in 1856, the history of Spandau from its early settlement, via the time of industrialization till today is shown. At the upper floor, special exhibitions are shown.
The citadel Spandauer Zitadelle with its four bastions is one of Europe´s most important and best-conserved Renaissance forts. When it was constructed in the 16th century, the tower Juliusturm from the 13th century (now a look-out) and the hall from the 15th century were incorporated. Today, the Zitadelle is used for cultural purposes only.
Besides the presentations at the arsenal, an exhibition at the commander´s house gives an insight into the history of both the castle and the citadel. At the western main wall, one can see cleared archaeological find from the early days of the castle. At the bastion Königin, a unique ensemble of Medieval Jewish gravestones are erected which had been found at excavations at the citadel.
At the bastion Kronprinz, big art exhibitions are shown, there are concerts and big events in other halls and on open spaces. Furthermore, there is an art school for youth, studios, a puppet theatre, and a show room with bats.
